QuiltCon Prep

QuiltCon has already come and gone, but I was so busy prepping for it, then experiencing it, and then recovering from it that I'm just now finding time to blog about it.  I took a break from actually quilting anything to sew a bit of a wardrobe for QuiltCon.  While it wasn't necessary, I was motivated by everyone posting pics on Instagram of what they were making. And yes, I got caught in all the hoopla and made a few items, even sewing with knits for the first time! Do NOT be afraid of knits!!

The first thing I made was a Lela Tunic using Hoopla and Everyday Fun (Jennifer Heynen for In The Beginning Fabrics), black & white, of course!  I bought this pattern from Green Bee Design & Patterns a while back, with plenty of time to sew it before QuiltCon.  Of course, I didn't use all that time to sew for QuiltCon. Why would I want to do it ahead of time when I could wait till the last week to sew my wardrobe? Ha ha! This was a great pattern!  I did use my seam ripper a few times, but I'm not much of a garment maker and should really read the directions a few times before cutting/sewing.
See those leggings I'm wearing in that pic? Yeah, I made those, too.  Those are Virginia Leggings by Megan Nielsen Patterns.  This was my first pattern with knits. Oh my goodness! This is one of the easiest things I've ever made. Seriously, people! I could wear these all day, and I have plans to make a lot more of these, maybe even some capri leggings for the summer!

Next on my list was a Lane Raglan by Hey June.  I bought some brown knit fabric from Joann's just to make a practice one, but I was running out of time and didn't have time for practice and really didn't want a brown top, so I went straight for a safe fabric - black and white.  I figured if I didn't like how it turned out, I'd still wear it because, well, it's black and white.  And anyone who knows me knows that I really dig black and white :)
I'll admit that I need some practice with my neck band.  And the sleeves are way too long.  I'll be cutting the waistband and cuffs off of this baby to make it fit a little better.  Again, I'm not a garment maker.

And then I made another Lane Raglan out of Geometric Bliss (Jeni Baker for Art Gallery Fabrics), using Laguna Jersey for the sleeves.  I seriously love this shirt. Yes, I still need to practice on the neck band (have I mentioned that I'm not much of a garment maker?), but I still really love it and it's so comfortable!   I will definitely be making more of these! So versatile!  As you can see, I didn't add a waist band, and I shortened the sleeves to be three-quarter...you know, to show my tat!  ;)
And last but not least, I made a Scout Tee by Grainline using Cotton+Steel Ephemera double gauze.  THIS. IS. SO. SOFT.  I could live, eat, and sleep in this every single day....forever.  I need more double gauze in my life.  OK, it's a bit big on me, but I've learned from my friend, Caroline, who has been sewing garments (and a lot of other amazing stuff!) for a long time, that I've been using the wrong measurements.  Blah! Now I know.
And now that I know, I'll be a better garment maker.  And to quote Maya Angelou, "Now that I know better, I do better."

Stay tuned for more on my experience at QuiltCon!

  1. Awesome Lisa! You made so many great items and they are all very pretty! The double gauze shirt is my favorite. Even from just the pic I can tell it must be soft!

  2. WOW! I definitely wouldn't say I wasn't a garment maker if I were you????? These are all amazing! Way to go!

  3. Yes, I'd say you ARE a garment maker, so impressive!

  4. Wow - I'm inspired!! I recently bought a pattern for a top and a pile of fabric to use, but it has all been sitting on my sewing table for AGES! Every top looks great (and I can't believe you made the leggings. They look awesome!) I love every photo - you look great!

  5. You definitely ARE a garment maker...now! I'm so impressed, and you're inspiring me (which is scary). :)
    Great job!!
